DURING THE PREDAWN HOURS of January 18, 1991, Saddam Hussein responded to the opening sorties of a ferocious allied air campaign by ordering his generals to launch sarin-tipped SCUD missiles into Israel if he became cut off from his military commanders. [Times of Israel Jan 24, 2014]
The Iraqi army launched an initial eight SCUDs, randomly hitting Tel Aviv and Haifa and wounding seven people. In Vancouver BC, as Canadian artist Carl Chaplin and I prepared to fly into Jordan on a private peace mission financed by Carl’s maxed-out credit card and the thirty-dollars in my jeans, news outlets were reporting the first fatalities from sarin nerve agents in Tel Aviv!
“Bye-bye Baghdad,” I told Carl. We'd both heard on the news that the Israeli government had pledged to answer an Iraqi WMD attack with nuclear weapons. As the Jerusalem Post reported, even as Israeli Prime minister Yitzhak Shamir “was being pressured by Bush not to retaliate” — Defense Minister Moshe Arens was pushing for an immediate nuclear counterstrike.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff Dan Shomron later recalled how Arens had phoned US secretary of defense Dick Cheney to tell him: “OK, we’re going to attack, move your planes.” [Times of Israel Jan 18, 2018]
The erroneous reports of a lethal sarin attack on Tel Aviv were later corrected. But by then, Israel’s nuclear response was already airborne.
ECOWAR
I learned of this clandestine strike nearly two months later, while waiting to board a specially laid-on C-2 Greyhound transport plane in Kuwait. After meeting up with Earthtrust volunteers Michael Bailey, Jim Thorpe and Jim Logan in a windowless Kuwait City, we had moved quickly to organize the first environmental response to the biggest ecological disaster of modern times.
Between forays afield in one of the city's few operating trucks, by foot, and aboard "commandeered" Kuwaiti Air Force helos, we opened a map-decorated Environmental Information Center in the Kuwait International Hotel and began briefing crowds of oil firefighters, doctors, government officials and military officers. As globe-girdling "black rain" coated northern BC summits, our lobbying efforts would se more than a thousand burning and gushing oil wells capped four months ahead of schedule.
But after five weeks of trekking through through minefields under a perpetual pall of petroleum rain, in futile attempts to aid flocks of oil-blinded seabirds migrating from North Africa toward the Siberian steppes, I was physically and emotionally shattered. So when the mukhabarat secret police invited me for a private chat to discuss my widely-distributed reports to Environment News Service over the city's only functioning fax machine, I was eager to comply with their invitation to leave the country I had risked my life to eco-defend.
But how? The airport was wrecked. And I'd never checked in.
HAPPY TO HELP
Fortunately, we were used to approaching US military officers for assistance. They must have admired our efforts. The US Army had provided a giant truck to carry the heavy oil booms we'd scavenged (with permission) from the war-shattered al-Shuaiba Port to save the seabird estuary at al-Khiran. The amphibious Marines had responded to our plea to rescue endangered sea turtles on Qaruh Island. And the same Navy Air that had flown me into Kuwait was willing to fly me out.
Which is how, having bonded with my two US Navy pilots, I found myself standing nearby as they compared notes on an incident that made this 65-hour Cessna driver want to run in circles and scream and shout. Apparently, everyone in the naval air community knew that on January 18, a nuclear strike had been launched against Baghdad by the Israeli air force.
But without the proper IFF code required to proceed, the IAF fighter- bombers had been kept circling overhead while their request for clearance through American-controlled airspace was bucked all the way up the chain-of-command. “There still wasn’t permission from the [US] president, so we couldn’t coordinate,” Arens subsequently related.
IFFY
“Identification Friend or Foe” are unique transponder codes denoting friendly aircraft on inquiring radars. In this recent war zone, absence of the proper IFF identifiers could prompt the immediate destruction of any “bandits”.
This lesson had been tattooed into my DNA during our last aerial survey flight over southern Iraq, courtesy of the Kuwait Air Force. Re-entering friendly airspace, our Puma was making a beeline for Kuwait City when we were intercepted by a heavily armed US Navy gunship hovering close off our port side.
Unhappily, our clattering French machine carried the same desert camouflage as identical Iraqi helos. While the pilots up front frantically radioed our identity over dead channels, the increasingly insistent Americans repeatedly threatened to blast us out of the sky. Just in time, our terrified chauffeurs stumbled onto the correct frequency. Which illustrates why, without the proper IFF codes, the atom bomb-laden Israeli F-16s had turned back.
CAN YOU CONFIRM?
Fast-forward to Tuesday, January 9, 2006. After negotiating an elaborate telephone security screen, I finally reached my most trusted source. Though we had not spoken in months, I wanted to confirm a tip I’d just received.
A Gulf War combat veteran whose connections included boots-on-the-ground former comrades, high-ranking generals with skeletons in their footlockers, and intelligence agencies from the United States and “non-U.S.” countries, Jim Brown was my go-to guy for deep intel. “The people with dusty shoes,” he'd once told me, “need to be the ones being listened to.”
Having broken major stories that had caught the attention of a former Iranian president, the Vatican, British Parliament, the US Congress and the Joint Chiefs, I trusted my source. Identified only as “Hank” in my posted articles, Jim Brown always spoke with GI expertise and directness.
My uploads went instantly viral. But we were ever-mindful of the two “men in black” from a no-name agency who paid Brown regular “attaboy” home visits after his carefully considered — and my diligently worded! — revelations were posted on my Convergence website for the good of his former comrades and all humanity. Keep going, we were told. But be careful. None of their sponsors wanted to see the world blown up.
After exchanging high-fives over the phone, I told the medically discharged soldier (whose wartime service and subsequent Gulf War Illness I’d detailed in Bringing The War Home) that I’d been tipped that Israel had launched a nuclear strike against Iran on January 7. Could he confirm?
“Yes,” my source replied without hesitation.
After a stunned silence, I asked, “Would you care to expand on that?”
INTERCEPT OVER THE TAPLINE ROAD
He wouldn’t. A bona fide source will never volunteer sensitive information. Only follow-up questions demonstrating specific awareness of a close-held event will elicit the details underscoring authenticity. Even with my NROTC background and knowledge of military aviation, it took another three-and-a-half hours to draw Brown out.
Gradually, under my pointed prompting, "Hank" serially recounted how a three-plane IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) strike package had flown unannounced to the 160 marker on a tapline road 160 km from Baghdad. While there was no imminent Iranian threat, the turbulent aftermath of a Desert Storm provided perfect cover for "decapitating" Israel's most hated enemy.
Flying a standard racetrack pattern, the heavily-laden F-16s were topped off by a USAF KC-135 refueling tanker. “They were pushing the envelope,” Brown observed. But everyone understood that clandestine initiatives were standard Israeli practice.
Less routine were the single nuclear bombs strapped to each of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) Fighting Falcons. According to Brown’s sources, only one of those “bad boys” needed to reach its target. A second bomb could be used “to take out resistance” or hold the Iranian government hostage. “The third is backup,” he explained.
GOING DOWNTOWN
Ordering this nuclear strike, he added, had been “a minute-by-minute decision.” Configured with drop tanks and nuclear ordnance, the three minimally-marked Israeli F-16s from a “no name” detachment finished tanking. But instead of turning back, their pilots pushed up three throttles! Blowing right through the tapline 160 checkpoint, the warplanes banked towards Tehran, still another 700 kilometers away.
“They were going downtown, goin’ for the black robes,” Jim Brown related, referring to Iran’s religious leadership whose current location had been confirmed by Israeli assets “on the ground.”
Despite the accuracy of his previous "nuclear" disclosures, how could he possibly know this? Brown explained that his connections included “some of the handlers of some of those people on the ground.” When I queried his access to such singular informants, my friend and longtime source explained that 350 members of his Gulf War veterans organization, Gulf Watch, were members of the intelligence community.
As a free bonus extra, Iranian air defenses were not EMP hardened, Brown continued. With three unidentified bogeys zooming in from the west, “All their stuff is lit up. Everything’s on.” Until a blast of Gamma and X-rays from a precisely-lofted nuclear airburst. “Now they’re permanently off.”
But the Americans were watching. Diving on the trespassing Fighting Falcons, a flight of patrolling US Air Force Strike Eagles swooped past the Israeli formation “a couple of times.” The F-15Es rocked their wings to get their allies' attention. Expressions obscured by oxygen masks and polarized canopies, the Israelis kept going.
In response, the twin-tail American jets dropped astern “and then got tone,” Jim Brown related. With their own aircraft “locked up” by American air-to-air targeting radars, the Israeli flight leader called home.
WHO, US?
Even as Israel's three-plane nuclear strike was being engaged by American fighters over Iraq, angry officials at the prime minister’s office, foreign ministry and defence ministry of Israel “flatly denied” that their country would ever use nuclear bombs against a nation the Institute for National Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University was calling Israel’s “most serious threat.” [AFP Jan 7/07]
Institute board member, retired Brigadier General Giora Eiland, assured Ha’aretz that no military strike would take place against Iran without a full “strategic and military” understanding with the Americans.
“Because there are no free rides and our existence isn’t guaranteed,” retired Brigadier General Oded Tira chimed in, “we must prepare an independent military strike by coordinating flights in Iraqi airspace with the U.S.” [Ha’aretz Jan 2/07]
Though General Tira did not elaborate on the nature of such a lone strike, Eiland warned, “It might be perceived” as an understanding between the United States and Israel.
NO WORRIES
On January 8, Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the previous day's radar-tracked shenanigans as a “bluff” intended to scare Iran away from developing peaceful nuclear power. Warning that any “aggressor would regret such action very quickly,” spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini pointedly added: “This comes after the confession of the Israel prime minister who acknowledged that the Israeli regime possesses a nuclear weapon.”
Just one? Really?
Who dares say, “Dimona”?
RTB
"Hank" confirmed that the Israeli command had once again ordered their three jets to RTB: Return To Base.
Once again?
My military insider disclosed that two previous raids had been readied after public statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were interpreted as either clear or coded signals for an imminent war of annihilation against Israel.
Just how accurate was this assessment?
In mid-May 2006, an eight-page letter to President GW Bush from the Iranian president had been widely interpreted by the European press as a peaceful overture. Ahmadinejad’s closing phrase — “Vasalam Ala Man Ataba’al hoda” — could translate as, “Peace only unto those who follow the true path.”
But according to the Jerusalem Newswire, this historical phrase harkened back to the prophet Mohammad’s salutation to two infidel emperors in the late 620’s, inviting them to convert to Islam. Or be forcefully persuaded. Incendiary footage of an April 2006 speech aired by the Christian Broadcast Network highlighted the Iranian president declaring: “The Zionist regime of Israel is like a rotten, dried tree that will be annihilated by one storm.”
The implicit threat seemed clear enough. Especially if Iran had developed a nuclear weapon. For years, American intelligence agencies had insisted otherwise. But still…
FAST-TRACKING ARMAGEDDON
It seemed nuts for modern mullahs in Teheran to provoke a preemptive atomic attack that would quickly reduce their nation to radioactive rubble, ending 4,000 years of Persian civilization within an hour.
On the other, other hand, in the absence of a proven nuclear threat, would Israel’s equally fanatical but less restrained leaders issue orders proscribed by Christ, Nuremberg and the Geneva Conventions?
The Iranian regime’s own religious predilections remained troubling. As investigative reporter George Thomas told CBN, “Ahmadinejad believes that he has been chosen; he has a ‘divine mission’ to usher in the 12th Imam, the Mahdi. He believes that in order for this Mahdi to return, the entire world should be filled with chaos; there should be a battle between good and evil; in his mind between the east and the west.”
Mirroring the Christian fundamentalist vision espoused by the White House, war-obsessedt neocons and tens of millions of American biblical projectionists eagerly anticipating the "return" of their bloodthirsty Redeemer, the Mahdi’s triumph could be helpfully hastened by human induced Armageddon.
What might happen when both mythical Super Heroes clashed on the Plains of Abraham was anybody’s guess. But the Israelis weren't taking any chances. Ever since geopolitcally-cynical UN and British authorities established this Jewish enclave in the center of a turbulent Islamic sea in 1945, its leaders have adhered to a single overriding military maxim: "Do Unto Others Before They Do It To You."
Despite successive U.S. national intelligence reports reaffirming that Iran was not developing nuclear weapons, apocalyptic visionaries like GW Bush and "shotgun" Dick Cheney remained fixated on ordering an all-out attack against one of the world’s oldest and best armed civilizations.
“There are a few things Israel cannot allow to occur, Jim Brown told me. “One is to allow a Middle Eastern power to become an acknowledged and capable nuclear power.”
“WIPING ISRAEL OFF THE MAP”
Even as Israel’s Jan. 7 nuclear strike banked toward Iran, Agence France Presse was reporting: “Israel considers Iran its arch-foe because of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s repeated calls for the Jewish state to be wiped off the map.” [AFP Jan 7/07]
This “wipe out” quote has since become a mantra among militant Israeli and American Zionists. But Farsi-language expert Juan Cole more accurately translated the Iranian president’s controversial remark as: “This regime that is occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time.” According to Cole, Ahmadinejad was being “prophetic not threatening.”
Was Iran being framed by a fear-peddling corporate media once again recycling bogus threats to market high-tech weapons even more profitable than similarly addicting drugs? As a blogger pointed out in the London Telegraph: “Iran has never attacked any neighbouring country, and the lives of ordinary Iranians are lived in modernity and a relative and increasing freedom compared to its four neighbours — chaotic Afghanistan, violent and disintegrated Iraq, fascist Turkmenistan, mediaevally oppressive Saudi Arabia — all of whom have American presence, or are pro-American.
“Another neighbour, unstable, strife-torn Pakistan, has confirmed nukes and was responsible for spreading nuclear secrets to other rogue states. Nearly all the 9-11 hijackers were Saudi. And no action against any of these countries — so why do you propose action against the Mid-East’s relative oasis of stability and modernity and peace?
“Iran is not a perfect society, but give them time, and let them develop towards democracy uninterrupted by the totally counterproductive interference the U.S. specialises in. Life has got much better since the revolution. [Outsiders] should be sympathetic of a society that changes slowly, organically for the better, as Iran is; slow change is the only change that endures.” [Daily Telegraph Jan 8/07]
ISRAEL’S NEXT BIG IDEA
Never mind inconvenient history. Combining paranoia with projection, the Israeli calculus was compelling. Detonating a Hiroshima equivalent "small" hydrogen bomb over mountain-ringed Teheran would destroy that city — along with Iran’s secular and religious leadership — in a .07 second flash from a hundred suns.
At least that was the plan.
BAD BOYS
How big were each of the three bombs carried by those Israeli jets?
Jim Brown’s reply was immediate: “Twenty kilotons.”
“Twenty kilotons!”
The atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima, instantly killing or vaporizing more than 120,000 human beings (according to city records), had a yield of 15 kilotons. At least that many Japanese would die of radiation sickness.
Then came runner-up Nagasaki.
KEIKO
Eight-year-old Keiko Ogura had stayed home from school the day the Americans field-tested an atomic bomb on her starving city…
“That morning I was on the road near the house and all of a sudden I saw a flash of bluish white light — magnesium-like flash — and soon after a big sound with dust, and I was blown away and fell on the ground,” Keiko told the BBC in 2005.
“I found myself lying on the ground near the house. I thought the house was just in front of me, but I couldn’t see it because everything had become so dark and many pieces of wood and roof tiles and rubbish were falling on my head. There was black rain falling... It smelled bad and there were many spots on my white blouse.”
A wind sprang up "like a typhoon". Blown into kindling, entire neighborhoods of flattened wood-and-shoji paper homes burned like torches in the sudden unearthly gloom.
“I saw long lines of refugees, just quiet. I don’t know why they were so quiet. There were long lines, like ghosts. Most of them were stretching out their arms because the skin was peeling off from the tips of their fingers. I could clearly see the hanging skin, peeling skin, and the wet red flesh and their hair was burned and smelled, the burnt hair smelled a lot. Almost all the people were just asking mizu (‘water’), and ‘help me’,” Keiko resumed.
The bewildered little girl climbed a hill overlooking Hiroshima. “I was so astonished — all the city was flattened and demolished. In the morning people were moving, brushing away flies from their skin. My house was full of injured people. The next day some of the buildings were still burning, and the next day, and the next day…” [BBC News Aug 5/05]

THE REAL STORY OF THE ISRAELI COUNTER RESPONSE
by Pepe Escobar
From a very high level intel source.
In Asia.
NOT Russia-China.
Although the strategic partnership, of course, exchanges at the highest level 24-7.
Confirmed and re-confirmed [by independent sources].
It will be great to know what Sy Hersh hears from his Beltway sources.
Here we go.
Israel initially chose to respond with extreme force.
An F-35 loaded with a nuclear bomb was sent east over Jordan.
The mission: cause a high-altitude detonation over Iran that would provoke a surge in the high-capacity power lines, crippling Iran's electric grid, as well as disabling all electronic devices.
An EMP attack.
However...
... As the Israeli F-35 was leaving Jordanian airspace it was shot down by the Russian Air Force.
Hence the publicised version of the Israeli counter response was such a travesty.
In the end all sides decided not to publicise the real news— to de-escalate what could well turn into WWIII.
Pepe's alarming revelations were brushed off by Western experts, who did not buy the alleged F-35 shootdown or extent of a high-altitude EMP's effects. Nevertheless, given the telltale official silence following each use and attempted use of nuclear weapons since the instantaneous deletion of Nagasaki, this writer — who vividly remembers studying the effects of nuclear weapons during officer training — accepts Pepe’s broader assertions.
NUKES ARE NOT CUKES
Having united the Arab world and everyone else of conscience against its unchecked civilian bloodletting in Palestine and West Asia, the continued existence of the Israeli State is increasingly in doubt. Badly mauled in Gaza, IDF commanders and war-weary reservists are warning an international war criminal president that attacking Lebanon and Iran will end in massive missile carnage on all sides. And Israel's catastrophic defeat.
Unless a small cabal of maniacs in Tel Aviv resort to their air and submarine-delivered nuclear arsenal. Regardless of wind strength and direction.
Martin van Creveld knows what a fundamentalist regime with a Masada Complex might do in extremis. Often compared to Sun Tzu and von Clausewitz by American and Israeli officers, this "required reading" Israeli military historian warns in Transformation of War: “Our armed forced have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that this will happen before Israel goes under.”
POSTSCRIPT
As this final installment of "A Brief History of Nuclear Strikes Since Nagasaki" is being readied for a preemptive launch on August 11, 2024, the Times of India is reporting that an airlift by massive IL-76 military transports continues offloading advanced Russian air defense batteries and battle-tested hypersonic Iskander K (conventional) missiles with a range over 1,500 kilometers at Shahid Asyaee Airport in Iran.
The same electronic warfare systems that disabled American drones over the Black dSea have already been delivered. These Murmansk-BN systems are reportedly capable of suppressing the satellite navigation, surveillance and communications systems essential for conducting modern hyper-warfare at a distance of 5,000 kilometers.
While the outcome of Israeli missile strikes on Shahid Asyaee airport remains unclear, it is known that Moscow's unmatched weapons systems will be manned by Russian technicians.
These deterrents are being delivered just in time. According to former CIA analyst Larry Johnson, during the first week of August 2024 a senior Israeli military official in Tel Aviv told his source directly that "Israel was planning to use a nuke" in a preemptive strike" against Iran.
Johnson surmised that President Putin essentially told Netanyahu: "Hey, we've got our personnel there now and any attack on Iran is going to be viewed as an attack on us. So think carefully. Particularly, if you use a nuke, we'll use a nuke on you.”
Pro Tip #1: Russians don't bluff.
Pro Tip #2: Using the diminutive term, "nukes" to describe unimaginably destructive nuclear weapons will only hasten their continued use.
The always reliable Larry Johnson insists he is not exaggerating. "It's so crazy what these Zionists believe, that they talk their own nonsense and they don't realize how crazy it sounds. They're saying things such as, ‘Israel’s going to strike Iran and the war will be over in three days. And Iran will be begging for mercy.' They say that and they really believe it. And you know, that’s crazy talk. That’s not going to happen...
"But here's the danger," he went on to tell Nima on his Dialogue Works channel. "The people saying this really believe what they're saying... There's no reasoning with them. They believe their own fantasies."
NATO INVADES RUSSIA (see video below)
Meanwhile, NATO planners who apparently have never heard the names Custer and Paulus are sending rebranded French, Polish, American, Georgian, Ukrainian (and likely Canadian) soldiers/mercenaries to their violent deaths during an ill-advised mini-Kursk ("Koorsk") II replay as bold and brilliant as sticking an arm into the bear's mouth and smacking him in the face.
Unsurprisingly — at least to anyone dealing in reality — despite rapid initial advances by an impressively led and equipped NATO force, after elite Russian responders cut them off, the invaders quickly devolved into scattered small unit attacks on civilians, ambulances, firetrucks and local infrastructure. At the same time, Ukraine's denuded 800-mile-long Donbass front continues to crumble. The result: These latest terror attacks have ended all chances of peace negotiations, and hastened Ukraine's defeat, while surging already high Russian enlistments.
Pro Tip #3: After losing 30 million dead to Hitler's border incursion throughUkraine, Russia will never allow NATO to eventually emplace hypersonic nuclear missiles with a four-minute flight time to Moscow on its western border. Or permit Kiev's Western-backed Nazis to remain.
What will the US do? Can its "woke" military emphasizing low-standard "inclusivity" over dedicated merit really take on "Arab hordes" inflamed by Zionist atrocities — and backed by China's industrial might and the Russian Federation's unmatched military capabilities?
How has Washington fared in Yemen so far? After nine months carrying out aerial strikes against battle-hardened Aransullah fighters, the once-unchallenged US Navy has failed to deter sandal-clad missleeers and reopen the Red Sea to Israel-bound shipping. Instead, Eisenhower has been forced to sail back to Norfolk to repair the holes in her flight deck.
This reporter has witnessed the immediate aftermath of modern industrialized slaughter first hand. Hollywood and neocon cheerleading notwithstanding, war is not cool and not fun. Whether visited by asymmetric or direct attacks, I personally promise that anyone who remains indifferent to a not-so-distant WWIII will not like it when it comes to them.
$30/gallon gasoline and transport diesel prices anyone?
ECOWAR CONTINUED
In all the Internet hysteria and social media blather, who ever mentions the wholesale ecological devastation from the wars we so determinedly ignore? Or the prolific squandering of dirty fossil energy, misdirected human talent and dwindling resources in Washington's forever proxy wars against the commercially ascendent, peace-insistent East?
Heart-stricken by endless miles of rusting bombed-out taxis, trucks and school buses lining Kuwait’s Highway To Hell — and haunted by the ghostly screams of as many as 10,000 fleeing Palestinian guest workers and half-starved, barefoot Iraqi conscripts cut-off by Canadian fighter-bombers and and slaughtered by follow-on American and British cluster bombs — my biggest regret was that all those flag-wavers back home weren't with me and my Earthtrust brothers.
Wither now, all people of good hearts? Even as this latest Israeli attack on a packed refugee center in Gaza further inflames the Arab world, none should doubt that the Old Testament regime whose tanks and gunships accounted for more than half of its citizens deaths on Oct. 7 under its infamous "Hannibal Doctrine" — and whose vicious Talmudic god sanctions gang-raping Palestinian prisoners, while butchering hundreds of thousands of Semitic women and children in the rubble of Gaza and the West Bank — will, in extremis, exercise the “Sampson Option”.
Didn't a hirsute hippie named Jesus preach peace, tolerance and love? Even as Bibi and his bible-desecrating warhawks threaten to pull down the global temple, international pressure and calls for an immediate and enduring ceasefire by Jews outside and within Israel are also escalating. As Jews and Gentiles continue taking to the streets in cities worldwide...
Is Israel about to implode into a civil war?
Can an AIPAC-captured Washington rein-in its Zionist mad dog?
Will Russia save the world?
Finally and most critically, when will we say, enough! And abolish nuclear weapons forever.
No more Keikos.
